City Commissioner Dwight Selby and Port Orange resident Jerry Penny recently traveled to Cuba on a clean water mission trip.
United Servants Abroad, a ministry organization in which Selby serves on the board, has been lending a hand to Cuban residents for about eight years. Men of
Faith Florida, a local organization, build the cases to ship clean water systems, which consist of 350 parts and weigh over 200 pounds, Selby said. He also serves on that organization's board, and they have sent 48 clean water systems to Cuba to date.
Selby and Penny were in Old Havana as the 29th system was installed in a Methodist Church in Old Havana. Clean water systems have been installed in nine of the 15 Cuban provinces, all in churches. The water is free to anyone who needs it.
“Some people come from long distances to get the water," Selby said. "They estimate that they’re serving over 100 people a day.”
United Servants Abroad provides the $5,000 systems to the churches at no cost. The churches are responsible for having two storage tanks for the systems — one for clean water, and one for dirty water.
Ormond Beach-based Helping Hands Thru Arts recently donated $2,000 to Holly Hill schools thanks to the recent Holly Hill Arts Festival, which the organization produced and presented.
The partners of HHTA Pat Masotti-Abernathy and Dr. Pam Fieldus presented a $1,000 check to Holly Hill K-8 Principal Jason Watson and a $1,000 check to United Brethren in Christ Pastor Josh McKeown, according to a press release. The funds were donated to help advance art, music education and the purchase of musical instruments.
