The Florida Section 3 Little League Baseball tournament for the majors division was held on Saturday, July 13, at the Space Coast Communities Sports Complex and were hosted by Port St. John Little League.
Palm Coast played Navy Ortega Lakeshore in Game 1, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Palm Coast extended its lead to 8-0 in the fifth inning. Navy Ortega scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth, as Palm Coast won 16-1.
After Navy Ortega lost to Merritt Island in Game 2, Palm Coast squared off against Merritt Island for the championship.
Merritt Island got off to a quick start with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning, followed by an RBI single and a two-run single to make it 4-0.
The second inning started off with a bang for Merritt Island when Cooper Sherman led off with a solo home run. Hurd and Bryce Anderson would also reach base and score to extend the lead to 7-0.
A two-run home run in fourth inning gave Merritt Island a 9-0 lead.
Connor May managed the only hit from Palm Coast when he connected for a double in the third inning.
Flagler Palm Coast's Dave Halliday was selected as the boys track and field "Coach of the Year" for Florida by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Among the factors taken into consideration were team score and placement at the state championships, margin of victory, performance against rankings if available, individual championships, and how their teams’ performances stacked up to previous years.
The winners from each state are in consideration for the association’s National High School Track and Field Coach of the Year award.
Flagler Fluid, a new swim team in Palm Coast that is under the direction of Matanzas head coach Carrie Purdy, swims at Belle Terre Swim and Racket Club. There are about 70 student members who have joined the team and the number continues to grow.
The mission of the Flagler Fluid Swim Team is to promote zeal for competitive swimming by instilling core values of commitment, discipline, teamwork and safety; and emphasizing positive member experience with an insistence on integrity and respect. The swimmers practice three to six days a week. Many of their swimmers have competed in several competitive swim meets around the state.
FPC swimmer and three-time state champion Micayla Cronk spoke to the team on Monday, July 15. She talked about her swim career and her hope to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
