Vivian Swenson, of Port Orange, was recently awarded a $500 college scholarship by the Halifax Health-Auxiliary. This is the first scholarship awarded by the auxiliary to a teen volunteer.
As a 2019 graduate of the Champion Preparatory Academy, Swenson has volunteered at Halifax Health Medical Center of Daytona Beach for over a year and has donated more than 146 hours of service. Swenson began as a patient transporter and now serves as a patient ambassador in the intensive surgical care unit.
This summer, Swenson enrolled at Daytona State College with plans of applying for admission into the associate degree Nursing program. Eventually she would like to obtain a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing, with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
The Port Orange Historical Trust and Museum will be closed during July and August.
It will reopen on Thursday, Sept. 5, with the regular hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Monthly meetings will begin again at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Port Orange Fire Rescue’s Public Educator and Ladder 73 spent the morning at Silver Sands Middle School on Tuesday, July 9.
Firefighters spoke to the campers about fire safety and had Ladder 73 displayed for the attendees.
Port Orange Fire and Rescue conducted a neighborhood canvass along with the Red Cross to install smoke detectors. This was done around the Oak and Lafayette Streets in Port Orange during the morning hours on Saturday, July 13.
A total of 32 free smoke alarms were installed in 16 homes during the canvass. This provided 16 families and 42 residents safety from home fires within the community in a neighborhood that suffered a fire fatality earlier in the year.
Port Orange Fire and Rescue attended Port Orange Elementary’s Summer Camp on Monday, July 15. There were about 35 children and five adults that got to see a gear demonstration and spray water from hose lines.
