The students and coaches at Tiger's Eye Martial Arts & Fitness in Bunnell have proven that rooting for the underdog can be the right thing to do. The studio opened in January of this year, but that didn't stop them earning eight gold medals, eight silver medals and three bronze medals at the Newbreed Ultimate Challenge U.S. Open Jiu Jitsu Championship.
"A lot of them just started at the beginning of the year, so they're only seven, eight months into it," Tiger's Eye owner Timothy McLean said. "Some of them have done it before, but most of them are pretty new."
The championship was held on July 6 at Disney's Coronado Springs. This was the second competition Tiger's Eye participated in, with the first being in February. Tens students brought home the awards from competing in different divisions and categories.
McLean launched Tiger's Eye with his wife, Mandy McLean, and business partner Cedric Taylor "to have some real training, family-oriented ... We are like a big family."
On Oct. 12, the team will hit the mats again at the Newbreed Ultimate Challenge Jacksonville Fall Classic at the University of North Florida.
