Mad Dogs Flag Football concluded it first season in Palm Coast in May. League Owner Jarrod Maxwell, who is also a director for the Flagler Warriors of the Flagler County Police Athletic League, organized four camps to be held in July and had a date set for July 27. But Sam Sword, a former NFL linebacker who played one season for the Oakland Raiders and three seasons for the Indianapolis Colts, was holding his camp, an NFL Play 60 event, on the same day.
The two decided to come together.
The camp, which had about 150 kids attend, was held on the morning of Saturday, July 27, at Flagler Palm Coast High School.
“It puts tears in your eyes,” Maxwell said. “It’s something that this county is dying for. This county has not been known for football at the youth level. We’re looking to change that.”
The kids participated in drills that enhanced speed, quickness and hand-eye coordination. The stations were led by volunteers, which included former NFL players, college players and current members of FPC’s football team.
“It’s fun being around kids,” Bulldogs senior quarterback Donovan Montoyo said. “We used to be this age. It’s very fun to help out and lead them in the right direction and let them have fun. That’s what it’s all about.”
