Carmen Gray announced that she is hosting a Stop the Violence Community Tournament in honor of her late son, Curtis Gray, a former Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast High School student who was murdered on April 13.
The event, held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the FPC practice football field, will be a non-contact football tournament (all players must arrive 30 minutes early).
Carmen Gray is advising participants to wear LLC (Long Live Curtis) t-shirts and LLC wristbands. Music will be provided by DJ POPMONEY, and the event will be livestreamed for interactive audience participation. The event is free to attend.
Former Matanzas baseball player J.J. Sousa, who plays baseball for West Virginia University, is working on his game this summer by playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Players are drafted from their respective colleges and play during the summer.
Playing in a game for the North Adams SteepleCats, Sousa went 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI.
His team beat the Newport Gulls 14-9.
Stephen Usina is changing schools.
Usina — who starred at placekicker for Flagler Palm Coast's football team and at goalie for the Bulldogs' soccer and lacrosse teams — announced via Twitter that he's transferring to rival Matanzas for his final two years of high school.
However, he won't be sticking with football. His father, Stephen Usina Sr., told the Observer that he plans to focus on soccer and lacrosse while at Matanzas.
