In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day, AdventHealth hosted special brunches to celebrate cancer survivors. On June 2, nearly 100 community members gathered at the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Cancer Center, off Williamson Boulevard near Ormond Beach. Guests participated in an art activity and heard from Sandy Allten, cancer research nurse, who shared stories about her experiences with cancer. There was also an event in Palm Coast.
Ramirez named hospital administrator
Rafael Ramirez, Ormond Beach resident active in civic organizations, has been appointed administrator of the Halifax Health/University of Florida Health Medical Center of Deltona. On schedule to open in December, the 90-bed medical center will be Deltona’s first hospital.
After more than 30 years in the banking industry, Ramirez joined Halifax Health in 2014 to lead market development and community outreach efforts in the Deltona/West Volusia and Ormond Beach areas.
“During his time at Halifax Health, he has been extensively involved in many local organizations and activities which has resulted in close working relationships with community leaders and residents,” said Jeff Feasel, president and chief executive officer for Halifax Health.
A graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans, Ramirez received a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master of business administration degree.
Ramirez has served as chairman of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Ormond Beach. Currently, he is the chairman-elect of the board for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler and chairman of the city of Ormond Beach Budget Advisory Board. He has previously served as chairman of the board for the Daytona State Foundation and chairman of the Allocations Committee for the United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties. He has also been a member of the Checkered Flag Committee, Bethune-Cookman University Board of Trustees, and the boards of the
Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Council on Aging.
Ramirez is a board member of the Deltona Business Alliance, Healthy Start Coalition of Volusia & Flagler, West Volusia Chamber of Commerce, Ormond Beach YMCA, Four Townes YMCA, Volusia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Halifax Area Civic League and the Deltona Economic Advisory Board.
Breast cancer group receives funds
The Volusia County Women Who Care alliance presented a $18,000 donation to the Gina McReynolds Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on providing aid to families affected by breast cancer in Central Florida. Visit www.volusiacountywomenwhocare.com.
Kids get sports equipment
Pick-Pack-Play Day took place at the Keurig Dr Pepper facility in Ormond Beach on June 1 where almost $60,000 of sports equipment was presented to Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties and three other local children’s charities. KDP, in partnership with Good Sports, a national nonprofit partner that provides athletic gear for youth, made the event possible.
Not only did KDP employees help out during this event, but employees from local radio stations 103.3 The Vibe and 95.7 Hog volunteered their time and talent as well. Several members of BGCVFC from the Rossmeyer/Holly Hill Club helped pack the items for distribution.
KDP launched the initiative in 2011 to get kids and families active.
