The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Beechwood Lane in Palm Coast on Monday, June 24, due to an arrest warrant being issued for a resident at the home. When there was no answer at the door, deputies visited the homes of neighbors to inquire on the fugitive’s whereabouts.
One neighbor suggested deputies check another residence on Beechwood Lane, as the fugitive was known to visit with those
neighbors. The homeowner allowed deputies inside to verify that the fugitive was not on scene.
Another resident of the home, Megan Moss, was awakened by the deputies being inside the home and became very angry. Moss exited the residence wearing only a t-shirt and underwear and began screaming at deputies for waking her and yelling at the homeowner for allowing deputies inside the home.
The homeowner went for a walk to attempt to diffuse the situation and Moss followed him, screaming at the top of her lungs and pulling on the homeowner.
Deputies told Moss that they would have to place her under arrest if she touched the homeowner again and attempted to get her to calm down and return to her home.
While deputies continued to make contact at the home with the arrest warrant, they again heard Moss screaming and yelling at the homeowner. Deputies heard the back sliding glass door of the residence slam shut and immediately heard a child cry out in pain. A deputy rushed to the home and made contact with Moss and a 2-year-old who was bleeding from the hand.
The deputy contacted rescue personnel to come to the home and access the child’s injuries. The top of the child’s thumb had been severed by the slamming of the door by Moss. The deputy noted that “it was apparent that due to Ms. Moss’s level of intoxication, she was acting irrational with disregard for her children’s safety, and completely negligent, which resulted in Ms. Moss severing the tip of her two year old son’s thumb off with the sliding glass door.”
The child was taken to the hospital. It was unclear whether the injury would cause permanent disfigurement.
“I am thankful that our deputies were close enough to overhear this disturbance and were able to render aid quickly to this child,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We hope that Ms. Moss gets the anger management she needs and will learn that being intoxicated and angry does not mix and in this case caused a serious injury to her child, who she is responsible for their well-being. We hope and pray the
child has a full recovery.”
Moss accompanied the child to the hospital. A warrant was issued for her arrest and she was taken into custody on Tuesday, June 25, and was charged with child neglect with great bodily harm and driving with a suspended license. She was booked into the Flagler County Jail and is being held on an $8,500 bond.
