Two teenage boys were arrested after a homeowner told deputies that he was watching his home be burglarized live from Ohio via surveillance cameras he head installed on the exterior and interior of the home, according to a news release by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
Larry Mills, of Bunnell, made the call to FCSO on the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Mills told deputies that while viewing the footage, he could see the suspect broke a window to gain entry to his home and appeared to have fled once the home alarm system went off. FCSO responded immediately, established a perimeter around the home and cleared the residence.
Deputies located a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy walking nearby the residence on Oleander Drive.
The juveniles matched an initial description provided by Mills, so they were detained for questioning.
The homeowner provided FCSO with still images of the suspects captured from his home surveillance system, which helped deputies to positively identify the juveniles and place them at the scene committing the burglary.
When questioned, both boys told deputies that they were riding their bicycles when they saw the residence and walked their bicycles behind the wood fence before entering the home through the bathroom window.
The boys were both charged with felony burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and taken to the Flagler County Jail. However, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice directed both juveniles be released to their parents.
“This is a great example of how modern technology can be used to immediately report a crime in progress,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a release.
