A 15-year-old Pine Ridge High School sophomore was killed Monday, March 11, in a head-on crash that occurred outside the entrance of his school in Deltona.
According to a press release, Joshua Durner was the sole occupant of his vehicle and did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt. Durner was eastbound on Howland Boulevard around 6:50 a.m. when he turned into the school entrance in the path of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder, driven by 34-year old Dayana Garcia of Port Orange, hit Durner’s vehicle, and a Nissan pickup behind the Pathfinder was unable to avoid the crash.
The Pathfinder was carrying a 33-year-old passenger, Angelo Rodriguez, and two children, ages 3 and 1. The children did not have any significant injuries and Garcia is being evaluated for a hip injury. Garcia’s passenger, Rodriguez, was admitted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for monitoring and has injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.
The Nissan pickup was driven by 63-year-old Francisco Pinto, who had a minor back injury and was taken to AdventHealth Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City.
According to the press release, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash, and no charges or traffic citations are pending at this time.
Director of Community Information, Kelly Schulz, gave a district statement regarding the accident. She said the District has provided grief counselors to assist the students and faculty at Pine Ridge High School, and that they would be on campus again on Tuesday.
“Parents are encouraged to reach out to their students’ counselor if they feel their student may need additional support," Schulz said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and to the entire Panther community as they cope with the news of his passing.”
