The local special needs community shone bright at the Shining S.T.A.R.S. 2019 Pageant at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 16.
Presented by the city's Department of Leisure Services Special Populations Division, this pageant was free to participate for the 20th year. Participants of all age

Ormond Beach resident Ken Houk and his dog Teddy have been recently named the Joe Petrock Auxiliary Volunteers of the Month for March 291 by the Halifax Health - Auxiliary.
According to a press release, Houk and Teddy have donated more than 668 hours of service since becoming Halifax Health volunteers in February 2018. As members of the Halifax Health - Auxiliary Therapy Dog Team, Houk and Teddy visit with patients and participate in a variety of hospital activities and events.
The Halifax Health - Auxiliary is a local nonprofit who aims to serve the community through partnership with Halifax Health. It's been operating since 1932 and serves over 400 volunteer members contributing more than 80,000 hours a year. Visit halifaxhealth.org/volunteering
Six members of Prince of Peace Council of Catholic Women attended the Eastern Deanery General Meeting at St. Ann's Church in Deltona on Saturday,

Two Ormond Beach residents were recently named as judges for the first-annual Holly Hill Arts Festival, to take place on April 6-7 at the Holly Hill City Hall lawn. Scott Hiestand and Tracey Miner will be judging 70 juried fine artists and craftsmen, as well as awarding a $1,000 Best of Show prize and other awards.
Hiestand has lived in Ormond Beach since 1999, and his art has been recognized throughout the U.S. He's won the Indiana's upland bird contest, was selected for the Paint America National Gallery tour and designed Florida's bass fish vehicle license tag.
Miner's career started as an illustrator, a painter in acrylics and oils, and in photography. His love of creative design and photography lead him to the world of video and digital media, bringing his talents to companies like Apple, Adobe and Google.
The Holly Hill Arts Festival, presented by the city and Helping Hands Thru Arts, is free and open to the public. Part of the proceeds will go toward the Holly Hill School and the UBIC Academy. Visit www.HollyHillArtsFestival.com
With Enviro Camp at the Environmental Discovery Center just months away, the city of Ormond Beach is offering a scholarship for one free session of the camp, given in memory of past City Commissioner Joyce Ebbets.
Children ages 7-10 can participate by writing and submitting an essay on the topic, "Why the Environment is Important to Me." Entries must be in by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 22. They may be mailed to Siobhan Daly at The Casements, 25 Riverside Drive, Ormond Beach FL 32176; or sent via email in PDF or Word document to [email protected].
