The Bookettes visited John Unger and presented him with a German chocolate birthday cake and card, which named him an honorary member of The Bookettes.
The book chronicles the life of John I. Unger from his birth in Austria in 1920, his immigration to the U.S., joining the Navy, his training as a Corpsman and his subsequent assignment with the Marine 1st Defense Battalion on Wake Island. He married young, and while he was at Wake Island, he became a Prisoner of War for 44 months. All during this time, he wrote beautiful love letters to his wife; these letters are incorporated into the book.

This workshop is designed to give youth the fundamental techniques of photography. The students will learn — on DSLR cameras provided by Canon — how to manage exposure, focus and composition, as well as the basics of how to download and process the photos. Class will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, with the afternoon reserved for assignments. Cost for the five-day program is $250. Limited scholarships are available.
Admission is juried because the workshop is for serious students who want to learn the basics of photography. Studies are intense and hands-on, and the students will use what they learn to produce a short portfolio. The best photograph of the week for each student will be displayed at an exhibit at Guy Harvey Resort during the summer months.
Interested students need to submit a short essay — three or four paragraphs — about why they want to attend the workshop. Registration and scholarship information are available through the SACC web site at https://www.saintaugustinecameraclub.com/youth-summer-workshop.html.
