The body found floating in the Halifax River on Sunday, April 28, has been identified as 56-year-old Darrick Van Gipson.

Van Gipson was found floating in the river by the intersection of Riverside Drive and Katherine Street around 11 a.m. after a witness on a boatĀ told police he saw a body in the water, according to a police report.

When officers arrived, they saw Van Gipson in the water, stationary, as though he was stuck to something on the bottom, according to the report. It was determined he was deceased and that rigor mortis had set in.

An autopsy determined Van Gipson drowned.
