Residents at Legacy Crystal Lake apartments will have a different view across the lake when Eden Crystal Lake garden apartments are built. Ground breaking is set for June 2019.
The apartment community will have 288 garden-style units built at 1270 Reed Canal Road in Port Orange.
Amenities such as a clubhouse, resort style swimming pool, outdoor lounge, state of the art fitness center, frontage along a 38-acre lake, dog park, and a lakefront boardwalk are some of the offerings of the development.
The complex will be built on 19.5 acres on Reed Canal Road between Clyde-Morris Boulevard and Nova Avenue. It a joint venture between Miami-based developers Eden Multifamily and Ghitis Property Co.
Mayor Donald Burnette said that the area to be developed used to be a trash dump in former times, so residential development is a plus.
Ideally Burnette would like to see single-family dwellings being built in Port Orange but acknowledged the need for balance for those who do not own homes.
“In researching Port Orange and the Daytona MSA, we saw an opportunity to accommodate the pent-up demand for a brand-new, Class A apartment product,” said Jonathan Ghitis, principal at Ghitis Property.
"We are thrilled to partner with Jay Massirman, Jay Jacobson and the team at Eden Multifamily and look forward to a successful venture,” he added.
According to a press release on April 26, Eden seeks out multifamily development opportunities in neighborhoods that are underserved and overlooked, specializing in boutique infill projects.
Ghitis Property has a 20-year track record of outstanding returns in commercial real estate.
The area is zoned for multifamily use.
Christine Martindale, public information officer for Port Orange, said city staff is currently reviewing the site plan for the development to affirm the project complies with the city’s Land Development Code and the master development agreement for the Crystal Lake Planned Unit Development.
The land is across the street from the school zone for Atlantic High School.
