Flagler Palm Coast High School students battled through a screen to create the best promotional event poster for an “event of the year” in Photoshop, including original illustrations, photographs, photo Pmanipulations or collages.

The winner is senior Breanna Roux, who designed a poster about a music festival in Photoshop, using terminology relating to tools in Photoshop itself.

“We have done this contest since 2012, and it gives kids who want to go over and above the normal assignments something to look forward to every year to push themselves further,” teacher Ed Beckett said. “Everyone who enters this contest improves their skill because of it.  Plus, when they win, they get to strut around campus as the Photoshop Wizard of FPC for an entire year.”

Marlee Schrum, the president of the Matanzas High School Forensic Student Investigators club, volunteers on Saturdays at the Gray’s Adult Family Care Home in Palm Coast. After showing the pictures of the butterfly garden she and her mom put together, owner Nicole Gray said having a butterfly garden there for the residents would be wonderful.

MHS teacher Gloria Barton, club Vice President Sophi Brice and other club members decided to create a butterfly garden for the home. The two students explained what plants butterflies enjoy and how to upkeep the garden.

“It made us proud that we had an opportunity to make seniors happy when they look to their garden,” Schrum said in a press release. “We will continue expanding and growing this garden as the summer goes on.”

The students plan on teaching the seniors how to make origami butterflies next.
