Deputies responded to the Flagler County Public Library on the afternoon of Friday, May 10, after locating a man on the property, which is currently marked as a construction zone. The man told Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies his name was Ronald E. Phelps.
The man was unable to provide identification but claimed to be a transient from Alaska. Deputies used Rapid ID to identify him as Ronald E. Weikert, 69, who had an active warrant out of Lake County. The warrant was confirmed by Flagler County Communications Specialists.
The warrant was for failure to comply with sexual offender registration requirements, with a bond of $5,000 and signed on April 16, 2018, by Judge Heidi Davids.
“This is another example of the necessity of advancing technology these days,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “If the criminals won’t be honest with us, at least technology doesn’t lie. Now a sexual offender is off the streets and back in jail.”
Weikert was placed under arrest and taken to the Flagler County Jail, where he is be held pending extradition to Lake County, Florida.
