Passing forged instrument. Petit theft. A business employee called police saying a man bought a gift certificate with a counterfeit $50 bill, receiving $40 back in change. The victim said the man called later to see if he could return the gift card. When he returned, the employees asked about the counterfeit bill and also took his picture with a phone. The man said it was his brother that originally bought the card and then left.
The employees told the police that the man walked across the street toward the motels. The officer went to one of the motels and the desk employees, after seeing the photo, told him which room the man was staying in.
The officer found the man in the room, who admitted he used a $50 bill, but said he received it from a man named “Brad” who asked him to go to the business and buy the certificate. Brad had an injured leg and couldn’t go, he said.
The officer noted that the man kept possession of the certificate and tried to return it the business, rather than give it to “Brad.” The man was arrested. He was on probation for uttering a forged instrument.

Fraud. The victim said he got a call from someone at the IRS who said there was an issue with his tax and he would have to pay the IRS directly. Assuming it was a scam, he hung up. Within ten minutes, he received a call from a number that is the same number as the Daytona Beach Police Department. The person calling did not identify themselves, but was very aggressive, saying the victim needed to call the original number and comply with instructions.
The victim called the number and was told to go to the store and buy Google Play Cards worth $890. After the victim read the numbers to the caller, the call ended. The victim tried to get back in touch with the caller and then realized he was defrauded.

A person in the apartment allowed an officer to search but the man was not inside. He was identified using the vehicle information.

At the end of her shift, she got back into the car and noticed the placard was dirty and did not look right. She then noticed the registration was about to expire and her registration is valid until 2022. The placard had been switched, but the report did not say if the car had been locked. The placard was registered to a person who lives in Daytona Beach.
