The Great Kids Learning Center held its Hero Fest celebrating the individuals who make the Ormond Beach community better at First United Methodist Church on May 14.
The festival was meant to recognize people who make a positive impact and inspire others to follow, according to the festival program. The selected heroes were Mayor Bill Partington, Dr. Shelby Wolfe of Granada Animal Hospital, Musician Anthony Wild of Kids Rock the Nation, local authors and historians Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Howell, Annie Evert of the Environmental Discovery Center, Aggie Armstrong of Tomoka State Park, Michael Porter and Mike Manis of Florida Power and Light, and Florida Master Naturalist Joan Tague.
The Great Kids Learning Center students performed dances, shared artwork and tributes during the program in their honor.
Three Ormond Beach firefighters recently helped free a stray kitten out of the engine compartment of a citizen's truck.
Ormond Beach resident Maria Levrault wrote an email to the city stating that Bill Baronowski, David Randall and Kevin Holt from Fire Station 94 took a brief timeout from their dinner to help save the kitten, which was only weeks old at the time.
"The kitten is now fed, safe, and comfy," Levrault said. "These men showed much compassion for a precious life for which I am grateful. They should be commended."
As recipients of the 15th-annual Glenn and Connie Ritchey Community Service Award, Nancy and Lowell Lohman presented the Council on Aging with a $1 million check during the celebration on Friday, May 10.
More than 260 people attended the event, which benefitted the COA, according to a press release. Glenn and Connie Ritchey presented the Lohmans with the award, which honors local champions whose leadership and service help improve the county. In addition to the $1 million donation from the Lohmans, the event raised more than $100,000 for the COA through sponsorships, donations and a silent auction. Funds will go toward ensuring local seniors receive services that help remain in their own homes safely and comfortably. These services include Meals on Wheels, Neighborhood Dining and in-home services and personal care.
A total of $1,048 was recently presented to the Pregnancy Crisis Center, along with items for new mothers and babies, by the Prince of Peace Council of
Catholic Women. Marcia Rudman, Elena Torres, Theresa Ho, Marlene Braganza and Yvonne Turnbull collected items after mass for the organization's Mother's Day Baby Shower.
The seventh-annual spring photo exhibit by members of The Casements Camera Club will be held at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center from June 1-28.
The Casements Camera Club is asking the public to stop in and vote for their top three favorite photos by June 27. The winning image will receive the People's Choice award.
This is a free exhibit. The Performing Arts Center is located at 399 N. U.S. 1 and the exhibit will be open for public viewing during box office hours. The box office is open Tuesday-Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and two hours before a performance. An awards ceremony will be held on June 28.
Two Ormond Beach fifth graders recently placed in the Creative Minds Writing Contest, as announced on May 22.
Brylee Shorter and Cynthia Gunn won first and second place, respectively, in the third-annual contest, which is open to fifth graders in participating schools and aims to promote literacy and appreciation of the written arts. The girls attend St. Brendan Catholic School in Ormond Beach.
The Ormond Beach Lions Club has awarded Seabreeze High School senior Jose Berger a $2,000 scholarship.
Berger immigrated to the U.S. from Nicaragua a few years ago, according to a press release, and holds a 4.25 GPA. He is a member of the AVID program and is enrolled in AP and honors classes, as well as is a Dell scholar.
Berger earned first place in the science fair and is in a leadership position with the Leo Club. He is also a volunteer at the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in biology.
