Mainland advanced to the second round of the Class 6A FHSAA State Playoffs after the Buccaneers (6-4) defeated Booker T. Washington 38-20 the night of Friday, Nov. 8, at Daytona Stadium.
The Buccaneers' offense got things going with a rushing touchdown by senior quarterback Taron Keith. Running back Nathaniel Braswell tacked on a rushing touchdown of his own, which gave Mainland a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The lead would have been larger after Keith scrambled for a 99-yard touchdown run — but it was called back do to a penalty on the Buccaneers.
The Wildcats scored one touchdown and kicked two field goals to go down 21-13 at halftime, and the Buccaneers led by just 1 point late in the third quarter.
However, on the next drive, Keith broke free for an 85-yard touchdown run to give Mainland a 28-20 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Keith scored his third rushing touchdown of the night from 5 yards out with 55 seconds left in the game.
