The city of Palm Coast honored America’s heroes during the Palm Coast Veteran's Day celebration with the city's first Veterans Day barbecue and live music event on Nov. 11 at Central Park in Town Center.
A sunny day welcomed community members to celebrate those who have served the country. The barbecue was presented to veterans who had signed up to attend through various local veterans organizations.
The opening ceremony included the Pledge of Allegiance, the national anthem, a presentation of colors by the Palm Coast Fire Department, and words of appreciation by Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland.
There was also a traditional cake-cutting ceremony that serves as an annual renewal of commitment to service. Following tradition, the first piece was presented to the guest of honor: Thomas Piekarski, who served in the Air Force National Guard for 34 years. The second piece was presented to the oldest veteran present – John Vidota, 90 — and the third piece belonged to the youngest veteran present, 32-year-old Joshua Meeker.
Pulled pork, barbecue beans, coleslaw and apple pie were served to all who registered. County commissioners and Navy veterans Greg Hansen and David Sullivan were also present at the event.
