After seven weeks of play, Mad Dogs Flag Football closed out its season Saturday, Nov. 23, with championship games at Indian Trails Sports Complex in Palm Coast.
The league, which is co-ed and open to players ages 5 to 15, is in its second season and already in open registration for winter ball, which starts in January.
President Jarrod Maxwell said he hopes the league will bring the community together, while teaching the next generation of Flagler County football players in a safer environment.
“Until a kid is 13 years of age, they shouldn't be playing tackle football,” said Michael Schottey, vice president of Mad Dogs. “When a kid gets a brain injury early on in life, it can have a cumulative effect."
Schottey said both he and Maxwell are advocates for tackle football, but they’d like for the next generation of Flagler County to keep as many brain cells as possible.
“It’s not just to be better at the next level of athletics, but to be better business owners, better citizens in this community,” Schottey said.
To emphasize the community aspect of the league, the championship game night also included food trucks, a bounce house and fireworks.
League winners: 12U, Seahawks; 10U, Seahawks; 8U, Patriots; and 6U, Patriots.
