The Flagler Palm Coast Kiwanis Club will present all Flagler County elementary schools with Terrific Kids certificates and bumper stickers, as well as donations to fund the school year 2019-2020 Terrific Kids program. The total program cost is $7,603.48 dollars.
On Thursday, Sept. 19, Kiwanis Club members Dr. Maria Barbosa and Janet McDonald delivered a $940 check to Wadsworth Elementary School, $1,470 to Belle Terre Elementary, $1,110 to Rymfire Elementary and $1,200 to Bunnell Elementary. The money will be used to help with the purchase of trophies.
The Palm Coast Arts Foundation invites the public to the unveiling of the sixth turtle on their public sculpture Turtle Trail project. This statue, Quilty, is inspired by the works of a 1700s quilt artist Betty White, whose work hangs in the National Quilt Museum in Peducah, Kentucky. The unveiling will take place at the park at Colbert Lane and Waterfront Park Thursday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m.
Pat and Bill Verhagen, sponsors of Quilty, are also local business owners of the Cut Up and Sew quilt shop in City Market Place and Innovative Financial Solutions. “We are pleased to call Palm Coast our home for the past 11 years and feel blessed to be able to give back in this small way,” they said. “The addition of Quilty to our park is a wonderful addition to a place of serenity and reflection. We hope she is enjoyed by all who stop by to see her.”
“Quilty and I have spent over 80 hours together in my studio," said Bettie Eubanks, the first female artist to transform a turtle on the trail. "I’m not sure I’m ready to let her go, but all children grow up and go out into the world. I’m sure she will enjoy her new home and I will miss her not being in the studio.”
“We are excited that Bettie was our first female artist to take on the challenge of painting on a ‘non-traditional’ surface,” said Nancy Crouch, executive director of the Palm Coast Arts Foundation. “The community reaction to the Turtle Trail has exceeded our expectations. Bringing the art of quilt-making to life on a turtle shell is astonishing and adds yet another educational dimension to the Turtle Trail.”
A turtle statue named Garfield by artist Andy Sovia, sponsored by Kathy Reichard-Ellavsky, will also be unveiled at the Palm Coast Historical Society Oct. 26, with still more planned for the coming months. A map identifying the locations of these turtles will be available after the first of the year.
Monday, Oct. 7, students and staff of Imagine School at Town Center wore blue shirts in support of World Day of Bully Prevention.
The Flagler Performing Arts Academy "Triple Threat Team" of local youngsters ages 9-13 is preparing for an exciting experience performing at Walt Disney World, and being directed and choreographed by the Disney Entertainment staff.
"It is a remarkable opportunity for these students," said Ann Paris, the team's teacher. "We are rehearsing right now to prepare the music and the scene that we will perform on Oct. 12 at one of the Disney back lots. The Disney director will cast the lead roles, so everyone on the team is encouraged to have the lines memorized by the day of the event in case they are called upon to audition for lead roles when they arrive. They are enthusiastic and very talented!"
