'We're going to bounce back': Bulldogs lose to Seminole 34-9

With a 7-3 lead midway through the second quarter, Sanford started a drive with a shovel pass that fell incomplete, according to the officials .It was followed by a run that didn’t get past the line of scrimmage and a throwaway out of bounds.

Flagler Palm Coast coach Travis Roland was “1,000%” sure the Bulldogs forced a three-and-out. However, following a timeout, the down marker still showed third down. Initially, the referees blew the shovel play dead, even though Seminole’s tight end caught the pass between his legs. 

"This is a great group of kids. They're always going to stay positive. They're never going to doubt themselves. This team is resilient. We're going to bounce back."

Roland wasn’t given an explanation of the inadvertent whistle before quarterback Timmy McClain and the Seminole offense returned to the field. McClain escaped the Bulldogs’ pressure for a 19-yard run — and a first down.

The Seminoles finished the drive with a 31-yard touchdown pass.

The Seminoles continued to pull away from the Bulldogs throughout the game: They returned the second half’s opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and scored on fourth-and-goal to take a 27-3 lead with 8:33 to play in the third quarter.

The Seminoles knocked off their third Flagler/Volusia County opponent of the season by taking down the Bulldogs 34-9 the night of Friday, Oct. 11, at FPC High School.

“They earned their win,” Roland said after the game. “We turned the ball over too much and didn’t get enough stops.”

The Bulldogs’ offense struggled for much of the night — both on the ground and through the air. The Bulldogs (6-1) scored on a 33-yard kick from Mason Anderson early in the second period. Their lone touchdown was a 4-yard scramble from backup quarterback Preston Roberts with 5 minutes to play in the third period.

“The plan is there,” Roland said. “But when you don’t execute, when you don’t focus, that’s what happens.”

The Bulldogs were hampered by several injuries and illnesses: starting quarterback Donovan Montoyo continues to be sidelined with a knee injury, starting right tackle Tyler Dunn was held out, starting cornerback Jaylen Collins played with flu-like symptoms and two-way player Altarik Lumpkins left the game in the first half with an undisclosed injury.

“We’re a broke up bunch right now, man,” Roland said. “But that’s football.”
