Golf cars grow in popularity

TeeTime Golf Cars, 1510 N. U.S. 1, celebrated 15 years in business on Oct. 11. When it opened, it was the first golf cart dealer/mechanic shop in the area and has grown steadily, according to Pat Appolonia, sales and marketing manager.

Golf car communities such as Margaritaville and Plantation Bay continue to create a demand. Owner Dale Sheppard said he knows some people in golf car communities that don’t even own a car. They like the ease of getting around.

“When you’re in a golf car, it’s open, you can talk to you neighbors,” Sheppard said. “You can’t do that in a car.”

Dogs also love to ride in them.

“Some people buy them just to drive their dogs around,” he said.

They are also used in cities. The federal government, in an effort to conserve energy, wrote laws allowing “low-speed vehicles” on streets with less than 35 mph speed limits in the 1980s. The LSVs require headlights, seat belts and other equipment that make them “street legal.” Since that time, some communities, such as Flagler County, South Daytona and Holly Hill, have written ordinances with their own requirements for street golf cars.

Service is a big part of the business at TeeTime, as well as customization. TeeTime offers lift kits, back seats, cargo bed and many other options. In addition to golf courses, the golf cars are used at apartment complexes, condos, schools, hotels, etc.

They are available in gasoline-powered or electric, and Sheppard said the new option is lithium batteries, which has advantages such as no maintenance.

They sell both EZ Go and Tomberlin golf cars, new from the factory or reconditioned.
