The Sharks were initially slated to play Seabreeze on Friday, Sept. 6. Then came Hurricane Dorian.
While the storm ripped through the Bahamas and tracked toward Florida’s east coast, Volusia County Schools made the decision to cancel school for the majority of the week.
The game was rescheduled for the night of Monday, Sept. 9, so the practice time was cut short.
Regardless, the Sharks (2-0) defeated the Sandcrabs 32-0 at Atlantic High School.
“We were able to do what we did because of our coaching staff and how they prepared us,” said senior linebacker Tyler Berrong, who is currently committed to Division I program South Florida. “With the film we watch and what we do at practice, we’re always prepared for games.”
Although the offense struggled to click at times, the Sharks gashed the Sandcrabs for five rushing touchdowns. Starting running back Dallas Lovelace scored on a 1-yard run on the Sharks’ first possession. Aaron Walton scored the Sharks’ second touchdown of the half off a pitch from quarterback Aaron Manning to give Atlantic a 14-0 lead at halftime.
After Lovelace went down with an injury in the third quarter, backup running back C.J. Robinson carried the load, scoring twice for the Sharks, including a 22-yard rushing touchdown to put the game away late in the third quarter.
“He’s a baller,” Sharks coach D.J. Mayo said of Robinson.
Monday night was the Sharks’ first time playing a regular season game at Atlantic High School. The school recently finished installing lights on the field, allowing them to host games.
The team was ecstatic to play on their new field, instead of at nearby Spruce Creek High School.
“The environment was amazing,” said defensive back Jaye Brockington, who hauled in two interceptions against the Sandcrabs. “We could just tell that this was home. This was us.”
