Powered by 4-star running back Marvin Scott, Spruce Creek appeared to be in firm control during its game against district rival Flagler Palm Coast the night of Friday, Sept. 13, at Spruce Creek High School.
Playing at home, the Hawks jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. Hawks quarterback Nick Christiano connected with receiver Kevin Minckler for Spruce Creek's opening touchdown. And Scott, who ran for over 100 yards in the first half, scored the Hawks' second touchdown of the night.
However, with 4:41 remaining in the half, the snap sailed over Christiano's head, and the Bulldogs recovered it for a touchdown. The Hawks responded with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by receiver Cyncere Wilson.
With the chance to go up two scores before the half, Scott fumbled the ball on the goal line and the Bulldogs recovered it, as well.
The Hawks led 20-14 at halftime.
FPC's offense gained momentum in the second half, taking the lead 21-20 entering the fourth quarter. Another errant snap by the Hawks went over the head of Christiano, and the Bulldogs were able to scoop it up and run it in for a touchdown.
The Hawks (1-1) lost the Bulldogs 41-20.
"How do you turn the ball over for two touchdowns and overcome that?" Spruce Creek coach Andy Price said. "We're just not good enough to do that. We did a lot of stupid things tonight."
