The young, entrepreneurial minds at Moonrise Brewing Co. and Yes Coffee Co. have shared their passion and ideas to produce a beer: the Coffee Coconut Imperial Porter.
A porter is a dark style of beer, and this one, in particular, will have a lot of different malts in it, including dark chocolate, caramelized malts, black malt with sharp multi notes, according to Vance Tyson, Moonrise brewer.
Before they decided on the type of coffee they were using, Yes Coffee had a tasting afternoon for the brewers. “The Colombian coffee had the notes for the beer,” Tyson said.
For the five barrels they are producing, they used 60 pounds of coffee, and 50 pounds of organic shredded coconut were added to the brewing equation.
The porter was triple brewed to get the alcohol percentage they wanted, 9%.
The coffee was cold-brewed and added to the beer after it was done fermenting. It has been conditioning for about three weeks.
The beer will be released Friday, Sept. 13, at Moonrise Brewing Co. in the European Village. Yes Coffee Co. will have an espresso bar, Leilani’s Sweetery will have a cookie bar, Mike and Vin will be playing live music during happy hour, and DJ Moontang will be spinning music the rest of the night.
