After an 18-yard touchdown run by Buccaneers quarterback Taron Keith, Mainland held its first lead of the game with 5 minutes left on the game clock. Holding onto a 4-point lead over Sanford Seminole, the Buccaneers’ defense needed a stop — and they thought they had one.
The Seminoles’ running back appeared to fumble the ball, and Mainland’s William Marshall scooped the ball up and ran it back for a touchdown.
But the runner was ruled down.
The Seminoles scored on a 1-yard run with 1:23 remaining.
The Buccaneers’ comeback drive was stopped at midfield, as Seminole defeated Mainland 22-20 the night of Friday, Sept. 20, at Daytona Stadium.
The Buccaneers (1-2) were down 16-3 at halftime, but were able to make the necessary adjustments in the second half. Ethan Gettman nailed a 28-yard field goal for Mainland’s first score of the second half. A safety cut the Seminoles’ lead to 16-8. And a 2-yard touchdown run from running back Nate Braswell made the score 16-14 with 1:38 in the third quarter.
Mainland’s defense kept the Seminoles out of the end zone until that final game-winning drive.
“Boy, I though we had that fumble,” Mainland coach Scott Wilson said. “But credit to Seminole. We weren’t able to finish at the end. I’m proud of our kids. We fought to the end.”
