A 54-year-old man was arrested after he robbed a Jiffy Food store on Nova Road Sunday night, and he was tackled by two bystanders as he tried to escape.
Volusia County Sheriff's Office reports that Ormond Beach resident Anthony Robertson entered the store at 796 S. Nova Road wearing a mask and latex gloves, and displaying what appeared to be a weapon. Robertson pointed the "weapon," which turned out to be a plastic kite string handle covered by a rag, at the store clerk and demanded he give him the money from the cash registered.
He then tried to flee, but was stopped by two men who witnessed the incident. One knocked him to the ground and other beat him in the head and held him until deputies and Ormond Beach Police arrived, VCSO reported. Robertson was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital where he was admitted for treatment of head injuries.
Robertson is being charged with robbery with a firearm/deadly weapon, assault with intent to commit a felony, false imprisonment and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill. His bail is set at $35,000.
