A group of friends playing golf at the Conservatory Golf Course on Friday evening called 911 after a 74-year-old man pointed what appeared to be a rifle at them. The man had previously been yelling at the golfers from his residence telling them that they were violating golf course regulations by driving the golf cart on a wooden bridge meant for walking.
After the verbal altercation, the golfers told deputies that the man went back into his house only to return minutes later holding a firearm and pointing it at the golfers. The golfers told deputies that they were in fear for their lives. The investigation later revealed that the rifle was actually a Winchester Air Rifle, or BB gun.
Cell phone video recorded a portion of the incident and was turned over to law enforcement. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/aJzeJcofJJU (Warning: Video contains explicit language.)
Deputies made contact with the suspect, John Robert Orr (DOB 3/30/1946), who told deputies that he was upset that the golfers had driven a golf cart on the wooden bridge and on the putting green, which is against golf course regulations. Orr told deputies he attempted to call the “Golf Rangers” but when he could not reach them, he went back outside with the air rifle.
“A verbal argument turned into a man facing seven felony charges,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Grabbing a gun of any kind is not the way to solve an argument and could have ended much differently. If you cannot resolve it peacefully, call law enforcement and let us handle the situation.”
Orr was arrested and charged with seven counts of Aggravated Assault. He was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility where he is being held on a $2,500.00 bond. Orr does not have a previous arrest history in Flagler County.
