Police arrest man who stole $5 can of wine from supermarket

Nighttime loiterer

2 a.m. — 700 block of South Atlantic Ave.

Battery on a law enforcement officer. Police arrested a 26-year-old Daytona Beach man after he was seen loitering behind several beachside businesses. 

The reporting officer approached the man and asked him what he was doing. The man said he was "working," but told police he didn't have an ID on him, according to the report. When the officer asked him what his name was, the man said the officer "already knew it." The officer persisted and the man, using expletives,  told him to leave him alone. 

Police restrained him, and in the process, the man hit the reporting officer's forearm. He was taken to jail. 

Aug. 5

Repeat offender

9:20 a.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard

Petit theft. A 57-year-old Ormond Beach man, who had been trespassed last month from the same supermarket, was arrested again after he stole a $5 can of wine. 

Police report the man placed the can in hiss front pocket and exited the store without paying for it. The store's loss prevention officer recognized him and escorted him to his office to wait for police. Police issued him a new trespass waring and took him to jail.

Aug. 8

The name game

4:30 a.m. — First block of South Beach Street

False name. It took police about an hour to get a 39-year-old Deltona man to tell them his name. 

Police report that the man and his wife were found sleeping in a local park, which was closed due to the early morning hour. The man told police he didn't have an ID and provided them with a false name. He eventually told police he didn't want to tell them his real name because he had an open warrant. 

He was taken to jail.
