Flagler County has historically held its Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies outside in front of the county’s Government Services Building. But COVID-19 prompted the county to move its Veterans Day ceremony into the Flagler Auditorium this year — with socially distanced seating — and it went so well that the county may continue holding the event there in the future.
“When you walked in, there was somebody greeting you and handing you the program and everything, which didn’t happen in the past out front here,” Veterans Advisory Council Vice Chairman Hank Mangels said at the Veteran Advisory Council’s Dec. 7 meeting. “I thought it was really well run.”
Veterans Services Officer David Lydon proposed that Veterans Day ceremonies be held in the auditorium in the future, while Memorial Day ceremonies could still be held in front of the Government Services Building for the traditional flyover.
The city of Palm Coast also served 350 meals, drive-thru style, for local veterans on Veterans Day after the county’s event. The city event had originally been planned with seating, but the city had to adjust because of bad weather, and had many meals leftover as people canceled plans to come. The extra meals were sent to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and local fire departments.
The Veterans Advisory Council at its Dec. 7 meeting also voted to select Neal McCoppin as its vice chairman, doing so in his absence — McCoppin had missed the Dec. 7 meeting and will have to accept the nomination at a future meeting for it to take effect.
