Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast high schools represented the area well at the East Coach Championships Dec. 12, in Daytona Beach, each finishing first in their divisions. The competition is in the middle of the cheer season, after football and followed next by regional competitions.
For FPC, coach Wendy Wright was proud of the girls’ dedication.
“I have full confidence that they are always going to give me their best when they hit the competitive floor, and that’s all I ask for,” she said.
For Matanzas, coach Melanie Wood said she is pleased that the girls were able to experience a competition and learn to believe in themselves.
Even more than that, however, Wood said she is proud of her girls’ performance in the classroom: They have a team grade point average of 3.49.
Matanzas seniors Raquel Torres, Trinity Defalco, Natalie Valenteychik and Mia Tramontano also qualified for an All-American performance at Universal Studios in November.
