Nikki Golub believes everyone should be in a constant state of learning.
It's why she became a teacher — to inspire others to be lifelong learners. It's concerning how many choose to shut out knowledge, never challenge themselves and grow, Golub said. She wishes to instill the opposite philosophy in her students.
"I hope to be an example to my students so that they aren't afraid to accept ideas that might challenge their current perception of the world," Golub said. "There is nothing to fear if you are becoming a better person."
Currently, Golub is a media specialist at Mainland High School. She has been teaching since 2013. For the past four years, she has taught digital media and multimedia design, and prior to that, she taught English and reading.
The nomination as Mainland's Teacher of the Year makes her feel both elated and speechless. She never wins anything, Golub said, so the recognition is an honor.
"Teaching can be a thankless job, and it’s cool being acknowledged for what you are doing," Golub said.
Her favorite thing about teaching is helping students grow, and in her position, she has a whole library to help them do just that.
If she could share one piece of wisdom with her students, it would be to always be themselves.
"Don’t let social constructs define you," Golub said. "Be the person you want to be."
