Two Seabreeze High School students will face charges by Daytona Beach Police due to a video circulating on social media that shows them tripping another student.
The video, uploaded to the popular social network platform TikTok, shows the two girls kicking the student's legs out from under her mid-jump. Daytona Beach Police reported that the school resource officer at the school was made aware of the incident by school officials on Jan. 31, and that officers have been working with the parents and school since that date to address the incident.
DBPD said the victim's parents initially didn't want to press charges, and asked the school to "ensure that the two perpetrators be held accountable." Kelly Schulz, Volusia County Schools Director of Community Information Services, said an investigation was conducted, and discipline was given.
A petition was also started on Change.org asking that more disciplinary actions be taken against the two girls. As of 6:45 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, it had been signed almost 27,000 times.
The victim's parents later changed their minds and asked DBPD to press charges. Though many rumors have been spread regarding the incident on social media, DBPD said the victim didn't suffer or report any injuries.
"The school administration has taken measures to address this behavior and we are here to support them if needed," the statement by DBPD read. "The Daytona Beach Police Department in no way condones bullying within our schools and we stand united with our community and school administrations in that endeavor."
This is a developing story.
