Mainland's football team has a tradition of helping send its athletes to the next level. That tradition has been continued this year as several Buccaneers signed their national letters of intent at a signing ceremony for National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Mainland High School.
Here are the prospects:
- Ra'Mello Dotson (6-foot-1, 170 pounds) had a difficult decision to make for his signing day. Dotson, the Buccaneers' athletic cornerback and wide receiver, was deciding between several Division I schools in Florida Atlantic, Kansas, Central Michigan and Georgia State. Dotson, who had 50 tackles and 5 interceptions this past season, ultimately decided to stick with head coach Les Miles' Jayhawks.
- Ethan Gettman (6-foot-4, 185 pounds), the Buccaneers' rock-solid place kicker and punter, signed with Bryant University. Located in Smithfield, Rhode Island, the Bryant University Bulldogs compete in the NCAA's Division I as part of the Northeast Conference.
- Shayne Brennen (6-foot-9, 305 pounds), who started every game this season for the Buccaneers' offensive line, signed with Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. His former teammate, wide receiver Nathaniel Dell, played at Independence this past season before signing with the University of Houston.
- Kaleb Costner (6-foot-3, 236 pounds) is staying close to home. Costner signed with Stetson, a Division I FCS program.
- Chad Johnson (5-foot-11, 270 pounds), who stood out on Mainland's defensive line this past season, signed with Alderson Broaddus, an NCAA Division II program located in Philippi, West Virginia.
- Katavion Scott (6-foot-2, 290 pounds), a member of Mainland's stout offensive line, signed with Florida Memorial, an NAIA school in Miami Gardens.
- Lukas Walker (6-foot-3, 270), much like Costner, is staying close to home. Walker, one of the toughest members of Mainland's offensive line, signed with hometown team Bethune-Cookman.
In addition, Seabreeze's football team also had one signee. The Sandcrabs' bruising running back Otis Walker (6-foot-1, 210 pounds), who hadn't played a game prior to the 2019 season since junior varsity his freshman year, signed with junior college program ASA Miami. Walker had nearly 600 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Sandcrabs this season.
