Four visual artists from Palm Coast will be showing their works at Daytona State College until Mar. 13 in an exhibit called “Imagination & Color.”
DSC’s News-Journal Center Fine Art Gallery has been showing the abstract art of David Rubello, William Brant, Mary Keithan and William Mazziotti from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday since Feb. 10, and the artists themselves will be present at an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Rubello, though, prefers the term “non-objective” to “abstract.”
“It comes from our imaginations,” he said of the images in the group’s artwork. That and their mutual interest in playing with color gave the exhibit its title. They all draw from nature, Rubello said, especially Keithan, who often paints outdoors.
The group came together to “talk about art, exchange ideas and thoughts, experiences,” Rubello said, and find camaraderie in the solitary experience of painting. They decided to exhibit at DSC because most of them had experience teaching at different colleges — Rubello himself taught at DSC for a semester.
“This is a special moment for all of us,” he said. They don’t have shows all the time, and they all think it is important for people to come to art shows and communicate with artists directly, ask them questions.
Being Palm Coast residents, though, Rubello said they all hope to one day have shows close to home.
