Opening day of Palm Coast Little League's spring season is almost here and with it, the league will be celebrating the start of its 20th season.
When PCLL was first created, there were just two teams. Now, the league has about 50 teams, 600 kids in the spring league (400 during the fall), 400 families and nearly 300 volunteers.
"It's been great," said treasurer Fred Lewers, who has been involved with Little League for the past 60 years, including all 20 of the PCLL. "You keep kids busy, they stay out of trouble," Lewers said. "They learn to communicate with each other. I think that's even more valuable today than before."
Lewers and Peter Schoembs, who is entering his second season as president of PCLL, agreed that the volunteers have been the biggest difference each year for the league.
"Every year just gets bigger and bigger," Schoembs said. "It's the volunteers. They make it go."
PCLL is the largest official little league in the Northeast Coast district. Opening day is on Feb. 29 at the Indian Trails Sports Complex.
Matanzas' varsity cheerleading team is a finalist, along with 15 other teams across the United States, for the Varsity Spirit Award for the Spirit Leader category. Varsity Brands will award $100,000 across 25 categories, including $3,000 to each winner and a $25,000 Grand Prize for America’s Most Spirited High School at the Varsity Brands School Spirit Awards Show on Saturday, May 9.
"For the past year, I have been working with the Matanzas High School Cheerleading team through the sideline and competition seasons," Matanzas assistant cheer coach Emily Hays wrote in a letter. "It has been my honor to see these young adults grow and flourish into the people they are today. I know that this team deserves this spirit award due to the hard work and dedication they put in for their teammates, school, and the community."
