When Seabreeze's girls basketball team had its first practice over this past summer, some of the girls couldn't dribble the ball, play defense or pass.
Many of them wee playing organized basketball for the first time. But new head coach John Rogers believed in them. Rogers went to several Seabreeze games over the course of the 2018-19 season, where the Sandcrabs went 1-17.
"I knew they were better than what their record indicated," he said. "I knew that with a lot of hard work, it could be turned around."
Fast forward to the second half of the 2019-20 season, the Sandcrabs already have seven wins.
"It's like riding a roller coaster," Rogers said. "We've had some highs and some lows. We are a work-in-progress. We haven't arrived yet. But it's amazing how fast they've improved."
He expects the team to get better throughout this season, but it will take a few years to get the program to become consistent.
"This is just the beginning," he said. "As a couple seasons go by, we'll be bringing this program back to relevance. It's just going to take a little time and some sweat equity."
