Seabreeze’s boys soccer team hadn’t beaten rival Spruce Creek in nearly 13 years. That includes last season’s debacle, when the Sandcrabs’ Andres Torres scored an own-goal in a contest that ended in a 1-1 tie.
He’d thought about that game almost every day since. He got his chance to make up for it when the Sandcrabs faced the Hawks the night of Friday, Jan. 10, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The Hawks scored first late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead.
However, Torres put one in the back of the net to tie the game with 15 minutes left in regulation. With 5 minutes to go, his teammate Eli Juezan put a ball past the Hawks’ goal keeper to give Seabreeze its first lead of the game.
The Sandcrabs, who had been struggling with several injuries as of late, held on to beat the Hawks 2-1.
“I’ve always dreamed about scoring against Spruce Creek,” Juezan said. “I think it’s a huge boost for the rest of the season. It’s going to keep us going.”
The Sandcrabs have always talked about the “Spruce Creek curse,” according to Seabreeze head coach Eli Freidus.
“Hopefully, we finally broke it,” he added.
With the postseason nearing, the Sandcrabs still have plenty of tough games left on the schedule.
“We need to finish out,” Freidus said. “There’s still a lot we need to work on.”
