Seabreeze’s boys wrestling team competed in the Matanzas Duals on Dec. 7. Going up against arguably the best team in the area, the Sandcrabs were ultimately defeated by the Pirates.
Seabreeze grappler Brock Roberts still remembers his match. He lost 15-0 and was pinned in the first period by his Pirates opponent.
The Sandcrabs, and Roberts, got revenge, however.
“They’re feeling success. They’re achieving things that have never been done before here. It’ll hopefully motivate them to push themselves and to have a little pride in what they’re doing.”

Competing in front of a packed gym on Jan. 11 at Matanzas High School, the Sandcrabs were able to defeat the Pirates to take home the Class 2A-District 4 duals championship. It was the first district duals title in Seabreeze history.
“To put it in their face at home was pretty insane,” said Roberts, who beat the wrestler he lost to earlier in the season. “It was surreal. It all came together.”
Mike Fries, the Sandcrabs’ second-year head coach added: “We’re little old Seabreeze. I don’t think anybody gave us a shot this early. The kids stepped it up, and it was something special.”
In addition, the Sandcrabs celebrated their first home match of the season, where they took down Deltona 60-24 the night of Wednesday, Jan. 15.
“It’s nice to get everybody wrestling in front of their home crowd,” Fries said. “The kids were a little nervous. I don’t know why. But this was just another stepping stone in our season.”
The Sandcrabs also competed in the regional quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach.
And with each match, Seabreeze has shown improvement, which is setting them up for an exciting and eventful end to the season.
