Sheriff Rick Staly hosted the fourth quarter of 2019 awards ceremony Jan. 16 at the Flagler County Emergency Operations Center in Bunnell. The awards ceremonies take place every three months to recognize exceptional service by Sheriff’s Office employees and members of the community.
Communication Specialist Tina Eddy answered a call regarding a suicidal person. Through extensive research, Eddy located an address for the subject so that deputies could respond and assess the situation. She received the October Employee of the Month and Distinguished Service Certificate.
Sgt. Jon Reckenwald was attending a First Responder breakfast at the Las Palmas Independent Retirement Living facility on Nov. 14 when he saw an elderly resident who was choking, not breathing, was turning red and could not communicate. Reckenwald performed the Heimlich maneuver several times and saved the man’s life. He received the November Employee of the Month and a Life Saving Award.
During December, Detention Deputy William Kennedy was instrumental with assisting in the integration of the Tek 84 Intercept Body Scanner for the Booking Area of the jail including creating a step-by-step guide and reviewing logs for quality assurance. He was the December Employee of the Month.
All Employees of the Month were given plaques from Family KIA of St. Augustine as well as a $250 donation in their name to FSEAT, the Flagler Sheriff’s Employee Assistance Trust fund.
Deputy Gib Smith, Deputy Jason Prather, Deputy Joe Barnett, Deputy Shannon Smith and Deputy Keaton Ray administered Narcan to save lives of people who had overdosed.
Also, Deputy Bryan Denker responded to an overdose call where a convenience store clerk was performing CPR on a subject in the parking lot. Deputy Denker administered two doses of Narcan which allowed the male to become responsive. For their life saving measures, both Deputy Bryan Denker and store clerk Daniel Dillard receive Life Saving Awards.
On Oct. 13, a 911 call was received stating a male was in the parking lot of Advent Health Palm Coast with a gun. A lock down was immediately put in place, and units worked with hospital staff to ensure the safety of hospital employees, patients and visitors. Command was established and deputies, detectives along with communications staff worked to gather information on the suspect. The SWAT Team conducted a search of the subject’s residence and secured the weapons in the home for safekeeping. The suspect was later arrested on a second-degree felony charge.

Frank Gamarra, Trevor Jacob, Daniel Parthemore, George Bender, Ron Mello and Chris Santoianni; Detectives Agustin Rodriguez, Dennis Lashbrook, Darrell Butler, Joe Costello, Rich Petkovsek, Joseph O’Barr and Diego Morales; DFCs Andrew Cangialosi, Edward Faircloth, James Crosbee, Brandon Fiveash and Daniel Malta; Deputies Edward Seeley, Austin Dalrymple, Stacy Rosado, Robert Finn, Steve Pierre, Robert Lewis, Aaron Clay, Seth Green, Jacob West, Troy Cavas, Brett Wood, Chris Crego, David Agata, Jordan Taylor, Omar Ocampo and Taylor Oldham; and Communication Specialists Josie Gammon, Tina Eddy, Stephen Watkins and McKenzie Davis.
For the quick intelligence gathering as well as investigative skills and tactics used on Sept. 28 by deputies Adam Gossett, Robert Lewis and Steve Pierre, they receive the Unit Citation. The sergeant was Joe Barile.
Over the weekend of Oct. 11-13, Cmdr. Jon Welker ran incident command for a homicide and a potential active shooter incident, coordinating all efforts with a professional and commanding attitude. Cmdr. Welker did all of this with minimal sleep throughout the weekend, and he stayed until all tasks were completed and made sure that he was the last unit to go home.
On Sunday November 3, Sgt. Daniel Weaver saw a post online about a special needs child having a birthday party. Not only did members of Sgt. Weaver’s squad (Cmdr. Jason Neat; Sgt. Kenny Goncalves; Cpls. Frank Gamarra and Chris Santoianni; and Deputies David Lichty, Jason Patel and Joseph Barnett) respond to the residence, but they brought the SWAT bear cat for the child to explore. The response of this squad made this child’s birthday one to remember.
Throughout 2019, Communications Training and Relief Supervisor Genice Caccavale worked diligently to create a training program for all new-hires in the Communications Center. On Dec. 17, 2019, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received the approval from the Department of Health for an approved training program. This will allow for a great reduction in training expenses and ensures that all new-hires receive the same training.
