A total of 850 personal protective equipment kits were distributed by the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce in just four hours on Thursday, July 9.
The Chamber thanked its volunteers and the Holly Hill Chamber of Commerce for helping hand out the kits, which were made possible by funding from the Volusia County coronavirus relief dollars and the Volusia Chamber Alliance, a newsletter stated. The chamber also thanked the city and Marc Schwartz with the Performing Arts Center for hosting the distibution.
The kits are meant to help businesses reopen safely during the pandemic. The kits included masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, paper towels and cleaning products. Each business was allowed up to two kits.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties was presented with a $4,000 check made possible by a joint effort from Lucas Haber, senior resident director at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, and the Tortugas Care Charity Foundation, according to a press release.
For every home run hit by a Tortugas player last year at their home stadium, $100 was donated to the Boys and Girls Club, who has moved into virtual programming for all its 1,400 children in the eight local clubs. The funds will be used to sponsor members at the Clubs. The press release states that Club fees have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow families to get back on their feet.
The Ormond Beach Elks Lodge No. 2193 recently awarded three $750 scholarships to local high school seniors.
The recipients were Ana Sanchez and Logan Stewart of Seabreeze High School, and Ryan Waddell of Father Lopez Catholic High School, a press release
announced. Students were presented with their scholarship certificates after a steak dinner.
"Most of the schools these students attend did not host an in-person senior awards ceremony, so our lodge was proud to be able to host the scholars and their families during these challenging times for this special presentation and dinner," the press release stated.
The Citizens for Ormond Beach will host a Zoom forum with the candidates for the Volusia County Council chair race — Jeff Brower, Deb Denys and Gerard Witman — at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.
