Vincent Lyon, an attorney by trade and a Palm Coast resident since 2012, believes one of his strongest assets is that he can get along with just about anyone.
“I have the knack for getting along with anyone," he said. "I value my ability to get along with and learn from everyone.”
Lyon, a former member of the Palm Coast City Council, is running for the Flagler County School Board's District 1 seat, a seat that was previously held by Andy Dance.
“I believe we are in a moment of transition, and we have the possibility of going in the wrong direction," Lyon said. "I believe there are strong indicators that the school board might be heading in the wrong direction. By the wrong direction, I mean a direction away from supporting effective, proven means of promoting the success of the next generation.”
One example of an indicator was the decision not to include the HPV vaccine in the schools' vaccine schedule.
If elected, Lyon would also like to focus energy and resources on the schools' "lowest performing groups" as well as problems with the budget.
“A good school system is fundamental to a community," Lyon said. "It’s the reason adults stay in a community to raise their kids. And a good school system is the reason those kids grow into being successful adults.”
Much of what will be dealt with, however, will most likely have to do with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I want to march in a direction that encourages the safety and health of our children and not putting children and families at undue risk," he said.
