With the primary election a little over three weeks away, and early voting starting on Aug. 8, Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis outlined the safety measures that will be in place at polling places due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Our goal is to provide a safe space for our voters and our poll workers," said Lewis during the COVID-19 briefing by the county on Friday, July 24.
If you choose vote in-person at a polling place, Lewis said you should expect to practice social distancing while checking in. Booths will be spaced 6 feet apart, and plexiglass will separate the poll workers and voters. Poll workers will also be provided masks, gloves and face shields, and all surfaces will be disinfected between uses. In addition, all voters will receive their own pen to use and take home afterward.
Lewis also explained that some voters will be receiving a new voter information card because some precincts have been removed.
“The biggest reason is we need to social distance between everyone within check-in and the voters as they are voting," she said.
Early voting will run until Aug. 15. If you're planning to vote by mail, the deadline to request a ballot is Aug. 8. On Election Day, Aug. 18, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
