A fugitive who pulled a gun on deputies and was shot now faces additional felony charges.
Steven Barneski, 30, was shot on July 1 when deputies tried to serve an arrest warrant on him and he pulled out a firearm. Three deputies fired their weapons, striking him multiple times.
He was released from the hospital July 6 and taken to the county jail on warrants for Violation of Probation involving possession of a Controlled Schedule II Substance and Violation of Probation for Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injury, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office news release. No bond was allowed.
On July 20 and July 29, Circuit Judge Terence Perkins signed arrest warrants for Barneski for the additional charges of including Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Convicted Felon, and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.
The warrants were served to Barneski at the inmate facility, according to the news release.
“This suspect is a convicted felon that shouldn’t have even had a gun to begin with,” Sheriff Rick Staly said, according to the news release. “Now he faces these additional charges for the additional crimes he committed that night. This case could have ended with a Deputy seriously injured or killed and I am very thankful the deputies survived this encounter with a dangerous felon.”
