A man and woman were arrested June 9, after they were found living in a stolen U-Haul — with illegal drugs.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a stolen U-Haul truck traveling north on U.S. 1 from Volusia County on Tuesday, June 9, at around 11:30 a.m. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a felony traffic stop in the parking lot at 443 County Road 304 in Bunnell.
There were two people inside the vehicle, 36-year-old Steven Curtis and 40-year-old Heather Lewis. Curtis, the driver, did not have a valid driver’s license and later informed deputies that there was methamphetamine in the truck, along with drug paraphernalia.
“It appears these two were living out of the U-haul,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Unfortunately they picked the wrong county to stop in and we ended their mobile vacation.”
Curtis was placed under arrest and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, driving with a suspended license with three prior convictions, destruction of evidence, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility where he is being held on a $7,000 bond.
The truck did not appear to be damaged and was towed until it could be returned to the rightful owner.
