Rico Bernard Ransom Jr. was arrested on multiple charges on June 11 after a 100 mph chase through Palm Coast's K-section, ending when he crashed in a swale, fled on foot and was found shoeless, hiding on a porch.
“His attempt to hide from deputies only resulted in even more charges after he took out a mailbox, damaged some swales, and burglarized a porch to hide," Sheriff Rick Staly said. "Another great job by our deputies getting a criminal off the streets and back in his familiar bed at the Green Roof Inn."
The incident began when a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy noticed a vehicle traveling on U.S. 1 at over 100 mph around 1 a.m. As the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver turned off all lights on the vehicle and turned onto Karat Path in Palm Coast.
The deputy was able locate the vehicle and witnessed it travel off the roadway on Kankalee Trail and over a concrete culvert, causing pieces of the vehicle to fall off. The vehicle then launched through another swale and onto Kauffman Place. The vehicle then traveled into a swale on Kauffman Place and became disabled.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle then fled on foot. A perimeter was established and an FCSO K-9 Unit responded while air support was requested from Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Air One helicopter. The suspect, 23-year-old Rico Bernard Ransom Jr., was located sitting on a bench in an enclosed front porch on Kannapolis Place. He was sweating profusely and was wet, muddy and shoeless.
Deputies searched the vehicle and located methylenedioxypryovalerone, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia.
Ransom was taken into custody and charged with Fleeing with Disregard for Safety to Persons or Property, Burglary of a Dwelling, Driving with a Suspended License, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Cathinones, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Ransom is known to law enforcement and has been arrested numerous times in Flagler County for charges such as Carjacking with a Firearm, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Mischief, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Fleeing and Eluding, Failure to Appear and Violation of Probation. He was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and is being held with no bond allowed.
