An unconscious man was pulled to shore on June 15 near Varn Park and was later pronounced dead.
“This is the beginning of a death investigation and while we do not believe foul play is suspected, we are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what occurred,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man’s family.”
On Monday, June 15, at approximately 4 p.m., the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to Varn Park at 3665 N. Ocean Shore Blvd. in Flagler Beach for a CPR in progress.
Multiple witnesses heard a young boy yelling that someone was floating in the water. A citizen swam into the surf and pulled the unconscious adult male to shore and began CPR.
No one on scene was able to identify the male, and no one had seen him enter the water or at the park earlier. The unidentified male was wearing only boxers and a pair of socks and appeared to have been floating in the water for some time.
Emergency medical technicians responded to the scene and took over life saving measures and transported the subject to Advent Health Palm Coast where he was later pronounced deceased.
Hospital staff assisted in identifying the subject and notifying the family. The identity is not being released at this time due to the active investigation.
The FCSO Major Case Unit responded and are still in the early stages of the investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
