Alexander Craig O’Connor and Lacy Lynnann Major crashed into a Flagler Beach canal after fleeing from law enforcement officers on June 15. They were both arrested.

“This duo is lucky to be alive after risking their lives and the lives of those on the roadways by driving so recklessly, but then they lost control and crashed the car into the canal,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “You should never flee from law enforcement as it only adds additional charges. All of the agencies involved worked together to get these two off the streets. Our Dive Team did a great job assisting in the recovery of the stolen vehicle from the water.”

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office on June 15 around 12:36 p.m. regarding a stolen red Toyota Corolla that was fleeing from SJSO deputies and nearing Flagler County. The vehicle was reported stolen from Melbourne, Florida.

By 12:47 p.m., FCSO Units had located the vehicle and were traveling behind it on A1A southbound. The driver of the stolen vehicle began to speed and pass cars on the busy roadways. Near Camino Del Mar the stolen vehicle nearly hit another vehicle due to driving recklessly. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed running multiple red lights and appeared to disregard the safety of others on the roadways. Because of the dangers to the community, FCSO did not pursue the vehicle.

Just before 1 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol began to pursue the vehicle while FCSO units and Flagler Beach Police Officers maintained visual from a safe distance. At the same time, Flagler County’s Fire Flight emergency helicopter was tracking the vehicle from the sky.

At 1:08 p.m., the vehicle crashed and came to rest in the canal behind 110 Lambert Avenue in Flagler Beach. The two occupants of the vehicle, 30-year-old Alexander Craig O’Connor and 22-year-old Lacy Lynnann Major, swam to shore and were taken into custody and secured. FHP placed O’Connor under arrest and charged him with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Driving with a Suspended License, and Resisting Arrest. Major was charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle.

The FCSO additionally charged O’Connor with Reckless Driving and Fleeing with Disregard for Safety to Persons or Property. O’Connor and Major were booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. O’Connor was released after posting a $19,500 bond. Major remains in jail on a $2,500 bond.

The FCSO Dive Team and Florida Fish and Wildlife Lieutenant Scott Dack deployed to recover the vehicle from the canal.
